They perhaps do “bring forth May flowers”, but they can be irritating at the least and downright depressing at the worst. Nevertheless, the songwriter is bringing us a positive reason for the inconvenience of the rain. And we all know that no matter how inconvenient it is to get soaked, the rain is needed. But just enough please. The many people around the country who have experienced the trauma of flooding have every reason to be apprehensive at any onset of “showers”. To quote from lyrics of another song… “I beg your pardon. I never promised you a rose garden. Along with the sunshine, There’s got to be a little rain sometime”. Here again, the wet stuff is getting the negative makeover. Sunshine is good but rain, is not exactly to be welcomed with open arms. However, let us accentuate the positive. What about being “Showered” with gifts….or compliments. And then there is.. “Showers of blessings”. It is these latter that God wants to give to each of us. The blessing of knowing that we are valued. The blessing of knowing that we are loved. The blessing of knowing that we are human beings and not merely a number. The blessing of a life that is worth the living. The blessing of a real purpose. The blessing of meaningfulness. The blessing of eternity. But all these come at a price. That of our total surrender to the will of God. Not easy, but worth it. After all, that is what Jesus did to make all this possible for us. Let me end with some words from Charlotte Bronte which in a way, bring us back to where we started: “Life believe is not a dream so dark as sages say: Oft a little morning rain foretells a pleasant day. Sometimes there are clouds of gloom, but these are transient all; If the shower will make the roses bloom, Oh why lament its fall?” Whatever you think of the rain, may the showers hold nothing but God’s rich blessings for you.
